Artist statement: My big idea for this sustained investigation process is to show different shoes in different places and in different positions to represent someone’s life in the current situation. For this piece I drew another pair of shoes, Doc Martens. I positioned these shoes in a way they create movement and spread the message of boredom or frustration (depending on how you interpret kicking the can). I used the form of the shoes to create movement, line work and mark making to create texture and shading, as well as using mark making only on the shoes to emphasize them. For this piece I experimented a little and made the shoes off-centered and did the piece in graphite and ink pens to give the piece a more raw and grungy feel. This piece has helped me because it allowed me to experiment with different media, off-center positioning, and using mark making to convey my message more deeply. If I were to do this piece again I would try to find more ways to put details in the background of the piece, but it's fine because having a somewhat simple background won't distract the viewer from the shoes.
